What is a No Claims Discount (NCD)?

A No Claims Discount is a reduction on your comprehensive car insurance premium. For every year you drive a car without making a claim to your insurance provider, you earn a discount that lowers your renewal costs.

The more years of no claims you build up, the larger your discount becomes, ensuring you have cheaper car insurance.

How long does a no claims discount last?

A No Claims Discount lasts as long as you don’t make a claim to your insurance provider. If you have a clean bill of health in a year of driving, your No Claims Discount will increase when you renew your insurance.

It will continue to roll, year on year, as long as you’re not forced into making a claim because of a collision with another vehicle.

What happens to your no claims discount if you make a claim?

When making a claim, you’ll likely reduce or reset your No Claims Discount, which may raise your premium.

You usually lose two years of No Claims Bonus per at-fault claim. However, for non-fault claims, windscreen damage, and having a ‘protected’ No Claims Discount, you’ll keep your figure intact.

If you’re responsible for an accident and your insurer pays out to the other party, this directly impacts your No Claims Discount bonus. Most insurance providers tend to use a ‘step-back’ scale. For example, if you have five years of NCD and make an at-fault claim, it will drop by two or three years. If you make multiple claims, you could lose your entire discount.
